English 4: Work on essay 1. Discuss topic selection and brainstorming ideas.

September 8, 2008 Monday

English 3: We will discuss what the reading zone is like. You should be 72 pages or more into your reading than you were last Tuesday in class (if you are reading 30 minutes a night).

Communication: We will discuss the study guide for Chapter 2. The Chapter 2 test and enunciation grade are tomorrow. We will begin Chapter 3 today.

English 4: Quiz and discussion over "Under Water." We will begin discussing your first essay assignment, on page 84. We will do some brainstorming activities.

September 5, 2008 Friday

HOMEWORK:

English 3: You will get two new vocabulary words today: ablution and abide. Add them to your binder and study them along with the other two words. We will discuss how to indicate titles, going over the worksheet from the other day and then doing another one for a grade. Read 30 minutes tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. You should be quite a bit along in your books if you do so.

Communication: I will give you seven sentences to practice enunciating. I will have you each say those sentences to me during your Chapter 2 test Tuesday for a grade. So..Chapter 2 test Tuesday. I will give you a study guide today (not for a grade) and we will discuss any questions you have Monday.

English 4: Quiz and discussion over "An American Childhood." We will finish your group practice today and discuss. Read "Under Water" on pages 81-83 and consider question 1 in the first set and all the questions in the second set for Monday. Quiz Monday.

September 4, 2008 Thursday

HOMEWORK:

English 3: We will discuss genres today. The rest of the hour will be binder checks and reading. Remember to read 30 minutes each evening.

Communication: Articulation practice today. Chapter 2 test will be next Tuesday.

English 4: Discuss looking at all sides of an issue. Group practice. For homework, read "An American Childhood" by Annie Dillard. Consider her purpose and audience as well as question #2 in the second set of questions.

HOMEWORK:

English 3: Soundtrack projects due today. Check the Smart Board for directions on how to submit. We will discuss when to underline and when to use quotation marks with titles today. You will have a worksheet that will be homework if you do not finish it in class. Remember to be reading for 30 minutes each evening.

Communication: We will work today with paralanguage and articulation. We will finish Chapter 2 today.

English 4: We are working on Chapter 3. We will discuss influences on your thinking.

August 28, Thursday

HOMEWORK:

English 3: You will have half the hour to finish your project draft today. The other half, you should be peer editing someone's paper. You will have half the hour tomorrow to finish your final draft and the other half to read. Project is due by the end of the day tomorrow. Remember to read for 30 minutes in your book every night.

Communication: We will continue in Chapter 2 and then do some activities that go along with what we've discussed.

English 4: We will begin Chapter 3.

English 3: Today is our first reading workshop. We will add some papers to our binders and then take at least 20 minutes to read. Read for 30 minutes tonight, noting how many pages you got through. Bring your draft of your soundtrack project tomorrow. You will have half the hour to type and half to peer edit. Friday you will have half the hour to finish and the other half to read in your book.

Communication: We will log into RLC and print transcripts today.

English 4: We will log into RLC and print transcripts today. For tonight, re-read "Grounds for Fiction" and consider question 2. Quiz tomorrow over the reading.

August 26, Tuesday

Reminder: Turn in your signed syllabus forms. If you get them in today, they are two letter grades off.

HOMEWORK:

English 3: We will discuss how to format song titles and lyrics. You will have the rest of the hour to work on your soundtrack projects. Tomorrow (Wednesday) is reading workshop, so bring your books with you. Thursday, we will peer edit and work on finishing the soundtrack projects, which are due Friday.

Communication: We will begin Chapter 2 today.

English 4: Continue discussion of Chapter 2, about critical readers. For homework, do
journal #3: Page 40 #1 .

August 25, Monday

REMINDER: Some of you still have not turned in your signed syllabus forms. Do so ASAP, as you lose one letter grade each day it is late. Turn it in today and you lose only one letter grade.

HOMEWORK:

English 3: We are still working on the soundtrack project. You should be working on step three, which is writing the paragraphs. If you still have not found your 5 songs by the end of the hour today, you will be behind tomorrow. You have all hour tomorrow to type and then you will peer edit Weds and finish typing. The entire project is due Friday. You will not have time to work at all in class Weds. and will have only part of Friday to work.

Communications: Ch. 1 test today. We will finish bag speeches and begin Chapter 2 tomorrow.

English 4: Quiz today over "Writing...Hamburger." We will discuss it afterwards and then begin Chapter 2.

August 22, Friday

Turn in your signed forms today for full credit. After today, you will lose a letter grade for each day it is late. I will begin calling parents around Wednesday for those of you who do not turn in your signed form.

HOMEWORK:

English 3: Your "Who am I" worksheet is due today to be checked by me. We will work all hour on the "Soundtrack of My Life" project. You must have chosen five songs by Tuesday when you come to class.

Communication: Chapter 1 test Monday. Bag speeches today.

English 4: Quiz today over "My American Journey." For Monday, read "Writing Is Not a McDonald's Hamburger." Quiz Monday.

Tomorrow is the last day to turn in your handbook forms for the Wii drawing.
Tomorrow is also the last day to turn in your signed syllabus form from my room to get full credit.

HOMEWORK:
English 3: If you haven't done so, turn in your two paragraphs. If you do not turn it in by the end of your hour today, it's late and will lose a letter grade for each day it's late. For tomorrow, complete the "Who are you" worksheet and bring it with you for a grade.

Communications: Bag speeches begin tomorrow. For homework, complete the Chapter 1 review guide and bring it with you tomorrow completed for a grade. The Chapter 1 test will be Monday.

English 4: Read Colin Powell's essay "My American Journey" on pages 10-12 and consider the first three questions at the end for discussion tomorrow. Quiz over the reading tomorrow. If you didn't complete your journal entry #1 (from page 3) get it done soon.
