English 3:  Remember to read 15 pages a day, six days a week on your self-selected novel.  Also, remember to record your book and page numbers each day!  We are working on informative research papers.  Currently, students need to have at least two sources by today.  They must have two non-Internet sources by next Friday and should have checked out any books they need this week.  Total, they will need at least five sources.  Today, students are working in groups to evaluate an assigned website for accuracy and reliability. 

English 4:  We are working on argumentative research papers.  Students have each found at least two sources.  They must have two non-Internet sources by Wednesday the 20th.  They should be checking out books from the library this week.  Total, they will need at least five sources.  Students will be presenting in groups today their evaluations of assigned websites.  We will then begin discussion of note/source cards.

Communications:  We are beginning Chapter 7:  the speech to inform.  Students will finish their audience analyses checklists today and begin a worksheet on analyzing their audience in preparation for their first major speech.  Additionally, we will begin discussion of outlining for this speech.

December 14, 2009 Monday

Well, this week will seem strange without Ms. Berry! It will also feel different since we have two exams each day and study hours! Refer to the schedule at http://www.cpher99.org. For those of you seniors who do not have to come to school this week after today, have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Be safe and smart during your break.

English 4: Discuss RLC's plagiarism policy and what plagiarism is. Discuss writing for clarity and style. Essay is due next Friday.

September 24, Wednesday

English 3: We will discuss "bumps": those thoughts that bump us out of the reading zone. Read the rest of the hour.

Communication: Practice mnemonics (Wal-Mart list). 5th hour students should turn in an explanation of the mnemonic device used in class by tomorrow. We will then continue in Chapter 3.

English 4: Work on peer editing in groups. We will then discuss eliminating second person and using sophisticated transitions. Essay is due NEXT Friday.

English 3: You will get your last two vocabulary words in the first set today. Quiz Thursday. Today, we will work on letter-essays. They are due by the end of the day next Tuesday.

Communication: We continue in Chapter 3 today.

English 4: We will do peer editing of rough drafts today.

September 18, Thursday

English 3: New vocabulary words. Next week we will have a test over the first ten words we've studied. Book talks today, since tomorrow is not a full day. We will discuss plans for our first literary essay.

Communication: Discuss answers to the logical fallacies practice exercises. Discuss commercials project. Project is due Monday, Septembe 29.

English 4: Discuss conclusions. Work on draft of essay 1.

September 15, Monday

All classes: Jason Swan will be here today.

English 3: Remember that your status check answers are due by tomorrow.

Communication: If Jason Swan doesn't take all hour, we will continue logical fallacies.

Communication: Chapter 2 test. Enunciation grade. Continue in Chapter 3 if time allows.


English 4: Work on essay 1. Discuss topic selection and brainstorming ideas.

September 8, 2008 Monday

English 3: We will discuss what the reading zone is like. You should be 72 pages or more into your reading than you were last Tuesday in class (if you are reading 30 minutes a night).

Communication: We will discuss the study guide for Chapter 2. The Chapter 2 test and enunciation grade are tomorrow. We will begin Chapter 3 today.

English 4: Quiz and discussion over "Under Water." We will begin discussing your first essay assignment, on page 84. We will do some brainstorming activities.

HOMEWORK:

English 3: You will get two new vocabulary words today: ablution and abide. Add them to your binder and study them along with the other two words. We will discuss how to indicate titles, going over the worksheet from the other day and then doing another one for a grade. Read 30 minutes tonight, Saturday, and Sunday. You should be quite a bit along in your books if you do so.

Communication: I will give you seven sentences to practice enunciating. I will have you each say those sentences to me during your Chapter 2 test Tuesday for a grade. So..Chapter 2 test Tuesday. I will give you a study guide today (not for a grade) and we will discuss any questions you have Monday.

English 4: Quiz and discussion over "An American Childhood." We will finish your group practice today and discuss. Read "Under Water" on pages 81-83 and consider question 1 in the first set and all the questions in the second set for Monday. Quiz Monday.
